GP Assessments, Treatment Plans and Referrals

Your mental health is every bit as important as your physical health – and at Gympie Day and Evening Clinic, we treat it that way. Care built around you

Mental Health care with time to listen

We know that reaching out for mental health support is not always easy. Our doctors are trained to listen without judgement, take your concerns seriously, and work with you to find a path forward that is right for you – not a one-size-fits-all solution. Whether you are dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, stress, or something you are still trying to put into words, you are welcome here. Through Medicare’s Better Access Scheme, eligible patients can access subsidised sessions with a psychologist – your GP can prepare the treatment plan that opens that door.

Why See Your GP for Mental Health Support?

A Safe Space to Talk

Our GPs provide a confidential, non-judgemental environment where you can speak openly about what you are going through. There is no pressure, no rush, and no judgement – just honest, compassionate care.

Access to Subsidised Psychology

Through the Better Access Scheme, your GP can prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan that entitles you to up to 10 Medicare-rebated sessions with a psychologist per calendar year – significantly reducing the cost of mental health care.

Holistic Care for the Whole Person

Mental and physical health are deeply connected. Our GPs consider both together, making sure that any physical factors contributing to your mental health are identified and addressed as part of your care.

Ongoing Support and Continuity

Mental health is rarely a one-appointment issue. We provide ongoing support, regular reviews, and adjustments to your care plan over time – so you always have a GP in your corner as things change.

Medication Management Where Appropriate

For patients for whom medication may be part of the treatment plan, our GPs can prescribe and monitor mental health medications with regular follow-up reviews to assess how you are responding.

See a psychologist in Gympie

Amber Dalton is a registered psychologist who works at our clinic on Thursdays and Fridays. She has more than ten years of experience supporting people through trauma, relationship problems, anxiety and neurodivergence, including adult ADHD assessments. Because she works in the same building as our GPs, your doctor and psychologist can keep your care joined up. Read more about Amber Dalton.

How to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan

  1. Book a longer appointment with one of our GPs and tell reception it is for mental health.
  2. Your GP talks with you about how you are feeling and may ask you to fill in a short questionnaire.
  3. Together you write a plan with your goals and the support that suits you.
  4. If a psychologist is part of the plan, your GP writes a referral. With the plan, you can claim a Medicare rebate for up to 10 sessions with a psychologist each calendar year.
  5. Your GP reviews the plan with you after your first sessions.

Mental health appointments by telehealth

If it is hard to get to the clinic, many mental health reviews can be done by phone or video with your usual GP. Read about our telehealth appointments.

You can book a psychologist without a referral, but you will not get a Medicare rebate. To claim the rebate, you need a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from a GP.

How many psychology sessions does Medicare cover?
With a Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare gives a rebate for up to 10 individual sessions each calendar year.

Can I talk to a GP about mental health even if I do not want a plan?
Yes. You can book a normal appointment to talk about how you are feeling. Your GP will go at your pace.

Is what I say kept private?
Yes. Your appointment is confidential. Your information is only shared with your permission, or when the law requires it to keep someone safe.
