The Mirena is a small, flexible, T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus by a GP or gynaecologist. It releases a low dose of a synthetic progestogen called levonorgestrel, which works locally to prevent pregnancy. It is one of the most effective forms of contraception available, with a failure rate of less than 1 percent per year.
- Highly effective long-term contraception – effective for up to 5 years
- Works locally in the uterus with minimal hormonal absorption into the bloodstream
- May reduce or stop menstrual bleeding in many women over time
- Can also be used to manage heavy menstrual bleeding and endometriosis-related pain
- Fully reversible – fertility typically returns quickly after removal
- Suitable for women who have not previously been pregnant
- Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections

Procedure Performed On-Site
Both Mirena insertion and removal are performed at our Gympie clinic, saving you the time and inconvenience of travelling to a specialist or hospital. Most patients are able to return to normal activities on the same day.
Experienced and Caring GPs
Our GPs are trained and experienced in IUD insertion and removal procedures. We take the time to make sure you feel comfortable, well-informed, and supported throughout the entire process – from your initial consultation to post-procedure follow-up.
Thorough Prior Consultation
Before any procedure is booked, a dedicated consultation is conducted to discuss your health history, confirm suitability, explain the procedure step by step, and answer all of your questions. There is no rush and no pressure.
Safe and Confidential Environment
Your privacy and comfort are our priority. Mirena consultations and procedures are conducted in a completely confidential setting. A female GP is available on request – simply let our reception team know when booking.
Post-Procedure Support and Follow-Up
We provide clear aftercare instructions and schedule a follow-up review to make sure everything is settled and you are comfortable with your new contraceptive method.
Convenient Appointment Times
Open Monday to Friday until 9:00 pm and on weekends. Evening appointments mean you can schedule your consultation or procedure at a time that suits your life.

Initial consultation
Book a consultation with your GP to discuss whether the Mirena is right for you. Your GP will review your health history, explain how the device works, discuss alternatives, and answer all of your questions. If you decide to proceed, a separate procedure appointment will be booked.
01
Preparing for the procedure
Your GP will advise you on the best timing for the procedure within your menstrual cycle and may recommend taking a pain relief medication such as ibuprofen beforehand to reduce discomfort. Please bring a support person if you would like one.
02
The insertion procedure
The procedure typically takes around 5 to 10 minutes. Your GP will insert a speculum, clean the cervix, and gently insert the Mirena into the uterus using a thin insertion tube. Some women experience cramping during and shortly after the procedure, which is normal and usually settles within a few hours.
03
After the procedure
You may experience spotting, cramping, or irregular bleeding in the days and weeks following insertion – this is normal. Most women are able to drive home and return to normal activities on the same day. Your GP will advise on what to expect and when to seek review.
04
Follow-up review
A follow-up appointment is recommended 4 to 6 weeks after insertion to check the threads and confirm the Mirena is correctly positioned.
