If you have been injured at work or developed an illness as a result of your work, getting the right medical support quickly is one of the most important steps you can take. At Gympie Day and Evening Clinic, our GPs provide comprehensive care for workers with work-related injuries and illnesses – including injury assessment, work capacity certificates, treatment planning, referrals, and return-to-work support under Queensland’s workers’ compensation scheme.
WorkCover Queensland is the main workers’ compensation insurer for most Queensland workers. If you have been injured at work, you will need a Work Capacity Certificate from your GP as part of your claim. Please be aware that from 1 July 2025, WorkCover Queensland no longer automatically processes a claim when your doctor submits a certificate – you must lodge your own claim through the WorkCover Queensland website or Worker Assist app. Our GPs can provide your Work Capacity Certificate and support your recovery, but the responsibility for lodging the claim rests with you as the injured worker.
Our WorkCover services include:
Work Capacity Certificates Issued Promptly
Our AHPRA-registered GPs can issue Work Capacity Certificates for work-related injuries and illnesses. We understand the importance of timely documentation to support your claim and minimise disruption to your income and recovery.
Thorough Injury Assessment
Your GP will conduct a thorough clinical assessment of your work-related injury or illness, document your diagnosis accurately, and provide a clear description of your work capacity and any restrictions or limitations – all of which are essential for your WorkCover claim.
Treatment Planning and Referrals
We coordinate your treatment and recovery, including referrals to physiotherapists, specialists, and allied health professionals where appropriate. All treatment recommended by your GP may be covered by WorkCover Queensland for accepted claims.
Return-to-Work Support
Our GPs support your safe return to work by working with you, your employer, and WorkCover Queensland to develop a realistic, medically appropriate return-to-work plan – including identifying suitable duties where a full return is not yet possible.
Ongoing Certificate Reviews
If your injury or illness requires time away from work beyond the initial certificate period, your GP will conduct regular review appointments to assess your progress and provide updated Work Capacity Certificates as needed.
Evening and Weekend Appointments Available
Open Monday to Friday until 9:00 pm and on weekends. If you are injured at work outside of standard business hours, our clinic is available to provide prompt assessment and documentation.
Step 1 – Report your injury to your employer
Notify your employer of your injury as soon as possible. This creates a formal record and is an important step in the claims process. Your employer has legal obligations to assist with the workers’ compensation process.
Step 2 – See your GP as soon as possible
Book an appointment at Gympie Day and Evening Clinic as soon as possible after your injury or when work-related symptoms first appear. Your GP will assess your injury, provide treatment, and issue a Work Capacity Certificate. Try to see a doctor within the first few days of the injury for the strongest claim outcome.
Step 3 – Receive your Work Capacity Certificate
Your GP will issue a Work Capacity Certificate. This is a legal document – not a standard sick certificate – that provides WorkCover with your diagnosis, treatment needs, and work capacity information. You will need this certificate to lodge your claim.
Step 4 – Lodge your own WorkCover claim
From 1 July 2025, you must lodge your WorkCover claim yourself. Your doctor submitting the Work Capacity Certificate no longer automatically starts a claim. Lodge your claim online at the WorkCover Queensland website or via the Worker Assist app. You have up to 6 months from the date you first saw a doctor about the injury to lodge your claim – but do not delay.
Step 5 – Ongoing treatment and review
Your GP will continue to manage your treatment, provide updated Work Capacity Certificates at each review, and support your return to work. Keep all appointments and communicate openly with your GP about your recovery progress.
Important info:
– From 1 July 2025, you must lodge your own WorkCover claim – your doctor submitting a Work Capacity Certificate does not automatically start a claim
– Claims must generally be lodged within 6 months of first seeing a doctor about the injury
– You have the right to choose your own treating GP – you are not required to see a doctor nominated by your employer
– A Work Capacity Certificate is a legal document and is different from a standard medical certificate – only an AHPRA-registered GP, nurse practitioner (minor injury), or dentist (oral injury) can issue one
– WorkCover Queensland covers reasonable medical treatment costs for accepted claims – keep all receipts and invoices
– Your employer is not entitled to details of your medical condition beyond what is included in your Work Capacity Certificate
– If your claim is rejected, you have the right to seek a review – speak with a workers’ compensation lawyer if needed
