Medical Termination of Pregnancy in Gympie - Confidential, Compassionate GP Care

At Gympie Day and Evening Clinic, we provide confidential, compassionate, and non-judgemental care for patients seeking a medical termination of pregnancy (MTOP). We understand that reaching this decision is deeply personal, and our role is to give you clear, accurate information and respectful support – whatever you decide.

Medical termination of pregnancy involves the use of two medications – mifepristone and misoprostol (MS-2 Step) – to end a pregnancy. In Australia, this option is available up to 9 weeks (63 days) of gestation. Abortion is legal and decriminalised in Queensland under the Termination of Pregnancy Act 2018. All consultations at our clinic are conducted in a completely confidential, safe, and respectful environment.

What Is Medical Termination of Pregnancy?

Medical termination of pregnancy uses a combination of two medications to end an early pregnancy. In Australia, the approved medication is MS-2 Step, which contains mifepristone and misoprostol. It is a TGA-approved, non-surgical option available up to 9 weeks (63 days) of gestation.

How it works:

  • Step 1 : Mifepristone is taken first – this medication blocks the hormone progesterone, which is needed for the pregnancy to continue developing
  • Step 2 : Misoprostol is taken 36 to 48 hours later – this causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue
  • Cramping and bleeding are expected after the misoprostol, similar to a heavy period or early miscarriage
  • Most of the process takes place at home after the initial clinical assessment and prescription
  • A follow-up appointment 14 to 21 days later confirms the termination is complete

What to Expect - The MTOP Process at Our Clinic

  • Step 1 – Initial consultation
Book a confidential consultation with your GP. Your doctor will confirm the pregnancy, assess gestational age, discuss all available options with you, and answer every question you have. An ultrasound is required to confirm an intrauterine pregnancy and determine gestational age before medication can be prescribed. Your GP will arrange this if not already done.

  • Step 2 – Informed consent and prescription
If you decide to proceed with a medical termination, your GP will provide full written and verbal information about the medications, what to expect, potential side effects, and when to seek urgent medical care. Your fully informed consent is obtained before any prescription is issued.

  • Step 3 – Taking the medications
You will take the first tablet (mifepristone) at the clinic or as directed by your GP. The second set of tablets (misoprostol) are taken at home 36 to 48 hours later. You will be given detailed written instructions for each step.

  • Step 4 – At home
Cramping and bleeding typically begin within a few hours of taking the misoprostol. You should have sanitary pads, pain relief as prescribed, and ideally a support person with you. Your GP will advise you on what symptoms are expected and what to do if you have concerns.

  • Step 5 – Follow-up appointment
A follow-up appointment is required 14 to 21 days after taking the mifepristone to confirm the termination is complete, check your wellbeing, and discuss ongoing contraception and support if needed.
