Iron Infusions

Iron Infusions in Gympie - On-Site IV Iron Therapy for Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anaemia - Available at Gympie Day and Evening Clinic, QLD

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in Australia, affecting people of all ages – but particularly women of reproductive age, pregnant women, and people with certain medical conditions. When oral iron supplements are not enough, or are not well tolerated, an iron infusion offers a faster and more effective way to restore your iron levels directly. At Gympie Day and Evening Clinic, we provide on-site iron infusions for eligible patients, administered in a safe and comfortable clinical setting.

An iron infusion involves delivering iron directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous drip, bypassing the digestive system entirely. This allows for a much larger dose of iron to be absorbed in a single session compared to oral supplements. The procedure is performed at our clinic and takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes. A prior consultation and recent blood tests are required to confirm your eligibility before an infusion can be arranged. Please call 07 2140 4888 to discuss your eligibility and current fees before booking.

Who May Be Recommended for an Iron Infusion?

  • Patients with confirmed iron deficiency anaemia who have not responded adequately to oral iron supplementation
  • Patients who cannot tolerate oral iron due to gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, constipation, or stomach pain
  • Women with heavy menstrual bleeding causing significant ongoing iron loss
  • Pregnant women with iron deficiency who require rapid iron replenishment
  • Patients with inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, or other conditions affecting iron absorption from the gut
  • Patients preparing for surgery who need iron levels optimised before their procedure
  • Patients with chronic kidney disease or heart failure-associated iron deficiency
  • Patients with a rapid need for iron replenishment due to significant anaemia

Why Choose Gympie Day and Evening Clinic for Your Iron Infusion?

  • On-Site Procedure: Iron infusions are administered on-site at our Gympie clinic, saving you the time and inconvenience of attending a hospital day procedure unit — significantly more accessible and convenient for most patients.

  • Modern, Well-Tolerated Iron Preparations: We use current TGA-approved intravenous iron preparations (Ferinject or Monofer), designed for safe, rapid administration with a much lower rate of adverse reactions compared to older IV iron formulations.

  • GP-Led Assessment and Eligibility Confirmation: Before your infusion, your GP will review your blood test results, confirm your diagnosis, discuss the cause of your iron deficiency, and ensure you are an appropriate candidate for intravenous iron therapy.

  • PBS-Subsidised Medication: The iron medication (Ferinject or Monofer) may be available at the subsidised PBS price for eligible patients — simply purchase it from a pharmacy using your GP prescription and bring it to your appointment.

  • Post-Infusion Monitoring and Follow-Up: You will be monitored at the clinic following your infusion, with a follow-up blood test arranged at the appropriate interval to confirm your iron levels have improved.

  • Convenient Appointment Times: Open Monday to Friday until 9:00 pm and on weekends. Please call 07 2140 4888 to discuss availability, as iron infusions require a dedicated time slot.

What to Expect - The Iron Infusion Process at Our Clinic

  • Step 1 – Prior consultation and blood tests
Book a consultation with your GP to discuss your symptoms and iron deficiency. Blood tests including ferritin and haemoglobin are required to confirm the diagnosis and determine the appropriate dose. Your GP will also assess the cause of your iron deficiency and whether an infusion is the right treatment for you.

  • Step 2 – Prescription and medication purchase
If an iron infusion is recommended, your GP will issue a prescription for Ferinject or Monofer. You will purchase this medication from a pharmacy at the PBS-subsidised price (if eligible) and bring the sealed medication to your infusion appointment.

  • Step 3 – Your infusion appointment
Please allow approximately 45 to 60 minutes for your infusion appointment. An intravenous cannula is inserted into a vein in your arm and the iron preparation is administered slowly via a drip. You are monitored throughout the procedure for any adverse reactions. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment. Wear comfortable clothing with loose sleeves.

  • Step 4 – Post-infusion monitoring
After the infusion is complete, you will remain at the clinic for a short observation period to ensure you are feeling well before leaving. Most patients are able to drive home and return to normal activities on the same day.

  • Step 5 – Follow-up blood test
A follow-up blood test is recommended 4 to 8 weeks after your infusion to assess your iron levels and confirm the treatment has been effective. Your GP will advise on the appropriate timing for your follow-up based on your individual circumstances.
