Implanon Insertion and Removal in Gympie - Contraceptive Implant Fitting, Removal and Guidance from Experienced GPs in Gympie, QLD

At Gympie Day and Evening Clinic, we offer Implanon contraceptive implant insertion and removal on-site, performed by experienced General Practitioners in a safe, comfortable, and completely confidential environment. The Implanon is a small, flexible rod about the size of a matchstick that is inserted under the skin of the upper arm and provides highly effective, long-term contraception for up to three years.

The Implanon is one of the most popular and convenient forms of long-acting reversible contraception available in Australia. Once inserted, there is nothing to remember – no daily pill, no monthly ring, and no need to think about contraception for up to three years. Before proceeding with an Implanon insertion, a prior consultation is required to assess whether it is the right option for you and to discuss the procedure in full. Please note that Implanon insertion and removal procedures are privately billed. Please call 07 2140 4888 for the current procedure fee schedule before booking.

What Is Implanon & How It Works

Implanon is a small, flexible rod inserted just beneath the skin of your upper arm. It releases a steady dose of the progestin hormone (etonogestrel), which prevents ovulation, thickens cervical mucus, and thins the uterine lining to effectively prevent pregnancy.

Why Choose Gympie Day and Evening Clinic for Your Implanon Procedure?

Our Implanon services are delivered through a patient-focused and clinically supported process:
  1. Procedure Performed On-Site – Both Implanon insertion and removal are performed at our Gympie clinic under local anaesthetic. The procedure takes only a few minutes, and most patients are able to return to normal activities on the same day.

  2. Experienced and Caring GPs – Our GPs are trained and experienced in Implanon insertion and removal. We ensure you feel comfortable, well-informed, and fully supported from your initial consultation through to your post-procedure follow-up.

  3. Thorough Prior Consultation – Before any procedure is booked, a dedicated consultation is conducted to review your health history, confirm suitability, explain the insertion and removal process in detail, and answer all of your questions without pressure.

  4. Safe and Confidential Environment – Your privacy and comfort are our priority. Implanon consultations and procedures are conducted in a completely confidential setting, and a female GP is available on request.

  5. Post-Procedure Support and Follow-Up – We provide clear aftercare instructions following your procedure and are available to answer any questions during your recovery. A follow-up review can be arranged if needed.

  6. Convenient Appointment Times – We are open Monday to Friday until 9:00 pm and on weekends, allowing you to schedule your consultation or procedure at a time that suits you without taking time off work.

What Is the Implanon Contraceptive Implant?

The Implanon NXT is a small, flexible plastic rod approximately 4 cm long that is inserted just under the skin on the inner side of the upper arm. It releases a low, steady dose of a progestogen hormone called etonogestrel, which prevents ovulation and makes it very difficult for sperm to reach an egg. It is one of the most effective contraceptive methods available, with a failure rate of less than 1 percent per year.

  • Highly effective long-acting reversible contraception – effective for up to 3 years
  • Inserted under local anaesthetic – the procedure takes only a few minutes
  • Nothing to remember once inserted – no daily pill, weekly patch, or monthly ring
  • May reduce period pain and make periods lighter or stop them altogether
  • Fully reversible – fertility typically returns quickly after removal
  • Suitable for most women including those who cannot use oestrogen-containing contraceptives
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections

What to Expect - The Implanon Process at Our Clinic

  1. Step 1 – Initial consultation
Book a consultation with your GP to discuss whether the Implanon is right for you. Your GP will review your health history, explain how the implant works, discuss alternative contraceptive options, and answer all of your questions. If you decide to proceed, a separate procedure appointment will be booked.

  2. Step 2 – Preparing for the procedure
No special preparation is required. Your GP may advise on the ideal timing within your menstrual cycle for insertion to ensure immediate contraceptive cover. Wear a loose-fitting top or a top with a sleeve that can be easily rolled up on the day of your procedure.

  3. Step 3 – The insertion procedure
The insertion takes approximately 5 minutes. A small area on the inner side of your upper arm is cleaned and a local anaesthetic is injected to numb the area. The Implanon rod is then inserted just under the skin using a pre-loaded applicator. You will feel some pressure but should not feel pain during the insertion. A small dressing is applied to the site afterwards.

  4. Step 4 – After the procedure
You may experience some bruising, tenderness, or swelling at the insertion site for a few days, which is normal. The implant is not usually visible but can be felt under the skin. Most women return to normal activities on the same day. Your GP will advise on wound care and what to expect in the coming days.

  5. Step 5 – When to return
Your implant will need to be removed and replaced after 3 years. Removal is a straightforward procedure performed under local anaesthetic at our clinic. You can have a new implant inserted at the same visit if you wish to continue with this contraceptive method.
