Mirena Insertion and Removal in Gympie - Long-Term Contraception at Your Local GP Clinic

At Gympie Day and Evening Clinic, we offer Mirena hormonal IUD insertion and removal on-site, performed by experienced General Practitioners in a safe, comfortable, and completely confidential environment. The Mirena is a small, T-shaped hormonal intrauterine device that is inserted into the uterus and provides highly effective, long-term contraception for up to five years.

Choosing the right contraceptive method is a personal decision and one that deserves careful, unhurried discussion with your GP. Before proceeding with a Mirena insertion, a prior consultation is required to assess whether it is the right option for you, discuss the procedure in full, and answer all of your questions. Please note that Mirena insertion and removal procedures are privately billed. Please call 07 2140 4888 for the current procedure fee schedule before booking.

What Is the Mirena IUD?

The Mirena is a small, flexible, T-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus by a GP or gynaecologist. It releases a low dose of a synthetic progestogen called levonorgestrel, which works locally to prevent pregnancy. It is one of the most effective forms of contraception available, with a failure rate of less than 1 percent per year.

  • Highly effective long-term contraception – effective for up to 5 years
  • Works locally in the uterus with minimal hormonal absorption into the bloodstream
  • May reduce or stop menstrual bleeding in many women over time
  • Can also be used to manage heavy menstrual bleeding and endometriosis-related pain
  • Fully reversible – fertility typically returns quickly after removal
  • Suitable for women who have not previously been pregnant
  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections

What to Expect - The Mirena Process at Our Clinic

  1. Step 1Initial consultation
Book a consultation with your GP to discuss whether the Mirena is right for you. Your GP will review your health history, explain how the device works, discuss alternatives, and answer all of your questions. If you decide to proceed, a separate procedure appointment will be booked.

  2. Step 2Preparing for the procedure
Your GP will advise you on the best timing for the procedure within your menstrual cycle and may recommend taking a pain relief medication such as ibuprofen beforehand to reduce discomfort. Please bring a support person if you would like one.

  3. Step 3 – The insertion procedure
The procedure typically takes around 5 to 10 minutes. Your GP will insert a speculum, clean the cervix, and gently insert the Mirena into the uterus using a thin insertion tube. Some women experience cramping during and shortly after the procedure, which is normal and usually settles within a few hours.

  4. Step 4 – After the procedure
You may experience spotting, cramping, or irregular bleeding in the days and weeks following insertion – this is normal. Most women are able to drive home and return to normal activities on the same day. Your GP will advise on what to expect and when to seek review.

  5. Step 5 – Follow-up
    review
A follow-up appointment is recommended 4 to 6 weeks after insertion to check the threads and confirm the Mirena is correctly positioned.
